KATHMANDU, May 31: Dairy Development Corporation (DDC), which was found selling curdled milk to consumers in Kathmandu Valley on Sunday, has said it would exchange such pouches with fresh milk on Monday.

The state-owned dairy producer had immediately withdrawn pouches of fresh milk from different parts of the Valley after consumers complained about quality of the product.

"As soon as we received information about curdled milk on Sunday morning, we asked concerned people to immediately withdraw pouches of fresh milk from the market," Ganga Timsina, general manager of DDC, told Republica. "Consumers, who have already opened the pouch, can return the pouch with curdled milk to the booth from where they purchased and get new pouch of fresh milk on Monday morning."Iswori Prasad Adhikari, manager of DDC, said the problem might have occurred due to power cut at DDC's Balaju-based chilling center on Saturday night. "Though we had used generators to maintain the required temperature, there might have been some technical problem. Rising temperature in Kathmandu Valley might have also caused the problem," Adhikari said, adding,

"Our technical officials are looking into the issue."

DDC, which enjoys market share of around 50 percent in Kathmandu Valley, supplies around 100,000 liters of fresh milk in the Valley every day. Before the earthquake of April 25, it was supplying around 150,000 liters on daily basis.

Demand for milk and dairy products have dropped by around 30 percent after the earthquake, according to DDC officials.
