KATHMANDU, Sept 12: Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki is set to lead an interim government after major political parties and representatives of the Gen Z protest movement reached a breakthrough agreement on Thursday evening.
According to sources, a three-member cabinet will be formed immediately, with Karki expected to be sworn in by 9 PM at Shital Niwas. The deal also includes the dissolution of the current parliament.
The decision comes amid youth-led demonstrations, popularly known as the Gen Z protests, which erupted early this week following the government’s controversial decision to ban social media platforms. The protests quickly evolved into a nationwide uprising against corruption, lack of accountability and restrictions on free expression. Thousands of young Nepalis poured into the streets, demanding systemic reforms and a new political culture.
Karki, who served as Nepal’s first female Chief Justice and is widely regarded for her integrity, emerged as a consensus candidate after heated negotiations. For the Gen Z representatives, her appointment symbolizes a break from entrenched political elites, while traditional parties see her as a neutral figure capable of steering the country through the crisis.
Despite the agreement, differences persist between Gen Z activists and established parties, particularly over the future role of the dissolved parliament and broader constitutional changes.
Still, Thursday’s development is being viewed as a landmark moment in Nepal’s democratic journey, with the youth movement shaping political outcomes in an unprecedented way.
