GORKHA, June 22: It has been found that the World Food Program (WFP) distributed substandard rice to the earthquake victims in Laprak of Gorkha district.

Organizing a press conference in the district headquarters of Gorkha on Monday, the monitoring team deployed by parliament said the rice distributed by the WFP in Laprak village was found sub-standard. "The rice that had reached Laprak is visibly rotten," said a member of the team.According to Bhanu Bhakta Dhakal, coordinator of the parliamentary committee, the rice had turned inedible while being transported to Gorkha. "There is no doubt that the rice rotted while being transported to Laprak," said Dhakal.

The rice meant for distribution to the quake victims was dispatched to Gorkha on March 14 and 15.

Of the 417 sacks of rice that reached Laprak, 102 were found sub-standard.

Two monitoring teams had been formed under the parliamentary committee to investigate the quality of food distributed by the WFP in quake-affected districts.

Meanwhile, the Gorkha District Natural Disaster Relief Committee has started double-checking food items readied by the WFP for distribution to quake victims.
