Seasonal vegetables have become cheaper by Rs 2 to Rs 24 per kg. Prices of other vegetables, however, have become slightly expensive.[break]
“Price of most of the seasonal vegetables has come down because of bumper harvest and subsequent rise in supply,” Bharat Khatiwada, president of Kalimati Vegetable Wholesalers´ Association, told Republica.
According to the data provided by Kalimati Fruits and Vegetables Market Development Board (KFVMDB), prices of big tomato, red potato, local cauliflower, white radish, brinjal, cow pea, green pea, bitter gourd, lady"s finger, onion green and mushroom has come down compared to a week ago.
Price of big tomatoes dropped to Rs 28 per kg on Tuesday from last week´s Rs 30 per kg. Similarly, red potato became cheaper by Rs 2 per kg to Rs 18 per kg on Tuesday. Likewise, prices of white radish and long brinjal went down by Rs 2 per kg each to Rs Rs 18 and Rs 16 per kg, respectively. Local cauliflower is also selling at a lower price of Rs 26 per kg.
On Tuesday, price of cow pea came down by a whopping Rs 24 per kg to Rs 26 per kg, while green pea became cheaper by Rs 5 per kg to Rs 55 per kg. Prices of bitter gourd and lady"s finger came down by Rs 5 and Rs 12 per kg, respectively, to Rs 40 and Rs 12 per kg.
Similarly, price of green onion came down by 50 percent to Rs 20 per kg while mushroom became cheaper by Rs 20 per kg and was sold at Rs 110 per kg on Tuesday.
According to the board officials, Kalimati vegetables market is receiving increased supplies from districts like Kavre, Dhading, Chitwan, Siraha and Saptari.
Khatiwada informed that price of seasonal vegetables as well as onion and potato will go down further as this is major harvesting season of these vegetables.
The Kalimati wholesale market is currently receiving around 700 tons of vegetables, fruits, fishes and spices combined per day, up from average daily arrivals of 500 tons recorded a week ago.
