As the cold wave continues to intensify, schools in the district have been closed till January 26. The schools were closed after the number of absentees started increasing with the dip in mercury, said a statement issued by Nepal Teachers Union, Rautahat.

The poor settlements have been hit the hardest. “We are planning to distribute firewood to the poor settlements in the district. We hope this will provide some relief to the poor,” said Chief District Officer Madhusudhan Bularkoti.

The cold wave has also made life difficult for the Majhi community of Bara district. “I have not been able to go to work for the past several days. If the cold wave continues my children would die of hunger,” said Jhamaru Majhi of InarwasiraVCD-2.

Mahesh Majhi of the same VDC shared a similar concern. “I have not been able to go to work for an entire week and there is no food left in my house. I am now concerned about the survival of my family,” said Mahesh. He said there are 35 Majhi households in the VDC.

Meanwhile, the District Education Office, Parsa has closed all community and private schools from Sunday. DEO has informed that the schools will be closed for 10 days till December 31.
