Karawang district immigration officials said that the arrests were made following a tip-off by residents who saw the boat off the coast. It was discovered later on that the boat had suffered a leak, stranding it adrift.

The immigration officials said that after their data was registered, the 62 individuals would be taken to Bogor, also in West Java, where the immigration office has a detention facility.

Indonesia has increasingly been used as a stepping stone by asylum seekers aiming to enter Australia illegally.
