BIRATNAGAR, Feb 28: Transport entrepreneurs, who called an indefinite transport strike in Sunsari district beginning Saturday to protest a 10-day strike organized by people affected by the Koshi flood, have withdrawn their protest from this evening.

The entrepreneurs took the decision after the Koshi-affected people called off their own protest on Saturday afternoon following a government response to their demand Friday.

In its response the government formed a high-level taskforce led by Constituent Assembly member Nandan Dutta to address the problems of people affected by last year’s Koshi flood.

“We withdrew the protest for 10 days, expecting that the taskforce would address our problem,” said Pancha Narayan Mandal, coordinator of the protest by the flood-affected.

Mandal said that the flood victims would resume their protest if the government fails to address their demand for adequate compensation for property damaged by the flood.

Meanwhile, Chairman of Itahari Chamber of Commerce and Industry Tanka Dulal said that the business community and transport entrepreneurs are handing in a memorandum to the regional administration office and the prime minister to protest the frequent transport strikes in the district.
