Summer is the time when your hair starts to become dry and brittle, making it prone for more hair falls and ripping it off of its natural shine. Many people are not prepared for the hot temperatures that can damage your hair cuticles which also results in frizzy and worn-out ends. So, to prevent your unprotected tresses from harm, you need to follow a proper hair care routine.

Nitu Shah, beautician at Habib’s Hair & Beauty Saloon at Kumari Pati in Patan, says that if not taken proper care of, hair have the high chances of getting dry, lifeless and limp, especially during summers. [break]

“One of the most simple and important things is to have oil massages on a regular basic so that your hair remains healthy,” she suggests.

She further explains that keeping your hair tied for the whole day can cause strain to the scalp; so it’s better to keep it untied for a while. Make sure to comb it to get rid of tangles as hair knots can easily cause hair fall, and make a proper partition of your hair so that applying oil becomes easier.

Many people also suffer most from dandruff and flaky scalps during summertime. Applying hair oil is also a good option to minimize dandruffs. But you have to best avoid or make minimal use of styling products like hair gels, mousse and hairsprays as these items can contribute to dry hair and dandruffs.

“Another important thing to remember is to have regular hair treatments. You can try this easily at home as well by using a good hair treatment cream available in the market. Hair treatments should be applied to wet hair and you can massage it and keep it for 15 to 45 minutes,” she explains.

To protect one’s hair from harsh heat, it’s vital to use conditioners, and you should also remember to wrap a scarf on your hair or put on a cap whenever you have to spend a lot of time outdoors.

“You can also use hair serum or hair coat which are easily accessible whenever you are out on the sun,” she says.

During this season, it’s also advisable to avoid or make minimal use of hairdryers as this can make your hair appear more frizzy, rough and dull. So to retain your hair’s natural moisture, hairdryers should be avoided as much as possible. Also better avoid or make minimal use of hot hairstyling products and hair strengtheners or curlers.

Shah explains that many people have the wrong notion that shampooing daily can damage your hair due to the chemicals. “But there’s so much pollution these days, and especially in summer when hair can get oily and sticky easily, it’s not a bad idea at all to shampoo daily.”

But it is also essential to use a moisturizing shampoo that’s gentler than your regular shampoo.

Also those who have done chemical treatments on their hair, like digital perms and straightening, need to be extra careful. “There are separate shampoos available for those who have colored their hair, and conditioning is a must for them; otherwise, your hair quality can just deteriorate in the long run,” says Shah.

Other simple rules to follow are to trim your hair frequently and drinking plenty of water to maintain healthy hair. Make sure you brush your hair regularly, as it’ll not only keep it free from knots but will also stimulate circulation in the scalp which encourages blood-flow to the roots of your hair.

Also, avoid taking hot showers or washing your hair in hot water. Use warm or cool water instead, as the heat can dry out or damage your hair. Further, once you have your hair moist, you can lock in the moisture by running your hair through cold water which will also give your hair that extra shine.
