Sports briefs: Sainik qualifies for finals

KATHMANDU, Aug 5: Sainik Awasiya Mahavidyalaya of Bhaktapur has qualified for the final rounds of the Coca-Cola Cup Inter-school Football Tournament in the boys´ category. Sainik defeated Gandhi Adarsha High School 3-0 at the Sano Gaucharan ground, Kathmandu on Monday to book its berth in the finals as the winner of Group B. Pradip Thapa struck for Sainik in either half while Sangam Shahi also scored one goal. In another qualifying match of the boys´ section, Gyanodaya edged past Glory 3-2 in tie-breaker following a 1-1 draw in the regulation time. Similarly, Anjit Thapa struck the lone goal in Jalpa High School´s 1-0 win over Ever Vision. Meanwhile, Gajurmukhi recorded a comfortable 5-0 win over Divya Gyan with four goals from Sudan Giri. In other matches, Gyanodaya Residence overcame Nobel School 3-0 and Keric beat Nepal Yuvak 2-0.



Thapa storms into quarters


KATHMANDU (REPUBLICA): Defending champion Hira Bahadur Thapa stormed into the men´s singles quarterfinals of the Second NSRA National Open Squash Championship on Monday. Thapa, who received a bye in the first round, registered a comfortable 3-0 win over Binayak Shrestha in the match held at the Squash Academy, Satdobato. Similarly, Kiran Maharjan defeated Keshavraj Thapa 3-1, Bhola Bista saw off Nishant Agrawal 3-2, Rajendra Shakya beat Rabi Jain 3-0 and Shiva Kayastha edged past Lokendra Man Singh Bhandari 3-2 to advance into the next round. In the junior boys´ singles, Jeevan Thing beat Rikkola Gurung 3-1, Amir Blon beat Sujan Sunuwar 3-0, Anamol Gandhi beat Ayush Rai 3-0, Akash Sunuwar overcame Dawa Sunuwar 3-0 and Deepak Thapa beat Sranap Tandukar 3-0. Likewise, Sapan Blon defeated Binita Tamang 3-1 in the girls´ singles while Swastika Shrestha saw off Santoshi Shrestha 3-1. In the masters´ above 45 years category, Bidur Dhamala, Sudip Bahadur Singh, Ratna Kaji Shakya and Lal Bahadur Gurung registered victories.



Shrestha nominated in judo judge panel

KATHMANDU (REPUBLICA): Nepal Judo Association (NJA) Secretary and volunteer coach of judo Dharma Kumar Shrestha has been nominated in the judge panel of judo for the Second Youth Asian Games to be held from August 14 to 24 in Nanjing, China. Shrestha will become the first Nepali judo official to officiate the game under new rules imposed by the International Judo Federation. Two Nepali judokas -- Him Parba Khatri in boys´ category and Phupu Lhamu Khatri in girls´ category -- will compete in the tournament, according to Deepak Harsha Bajracharya, the president of NJA. Similarly, another volunteer coach Bimal KC Khatri will participate in a youth leadership camp to be organized by the UN Office for Development and Peace in Korea from August 22 to September 3.



NSC forms committee for golden jubilee celebrations

KATHMANDU (REPUBLICA): A 29-member main organizing committee has been formed under the coordination of Gangaram Maharjan, the senior vice-president of National Sports Council Employees´ Association (NSCEA), for the golden jubilee celebrations of NSC from August 29 to September 5. According to a bulletin released by the Press and Publicity Department of NSC, the week-long celebrations will include sports competitions, blood donation and celebration parade, among others. Similarly, an 11-member sub-committee has also been formed to conduct the events.
