SPORTS BRIEFS: Karate team leaving for India Tuesday

KATHMANDU, Oct 24: A-13 member karate team including 11 players are leaving for Pune, India, to compete in the NKFI International Open Karate Tournament to be held there from Octber 29-31.

Rabin Subedi, Kiran Gurung, Gaurab Acharya, Saroj Gurung, Suraj Neupane, Bishal Ghale, Manish Shrestha, Pasang Tamang, Bijay Seda, Sriram Acharya and Kumar Nagarkoti are the players to compete in the event. [break]

Rjendra Kumar Ojha is the coach of the team who will also judge events in the tournament. Rajan Prasad Dahal and Krishna Bahadur Acharya are also accompanying the team. National Sports Council Member Secretary Yubaraj Lama and Nepal Siterio Karate Federation President Dawa Gurung bade farewell to the team amidst a function.

Soft tennis team off to South Korea

KATHMANDU: An 18-member soft tennis team including 10 players left for Mudyong, South Korea to participate in the 14th World Soft Tennis Championship to be held there from October 27 to November 1. Six men and four women players will compete in the tournament.

The men players include Ashok Singh, Kamal Bahadur Bhandari, Dusyanta Thapa, Sohan Dhaubadel, Manoj Subba and Nirmal Kaji Sthapit. Similarly, Niru Kayastha, Eliza, Ranjit, Chandramaya Rai and Utra Manandhar are the women players. Niru Kayastha is the team coach while Binay Bikram Shah, Devendra Prasad Bharati and Bijay Kumar Singh are the officials and Sanjay Neupane is the manager. Viyad Krishna Shrestha, Anand Prasad Shrestha and Mukesh Srivastav will perform the role of referee during the event.

Nepali, Kayastha on lead

KATHMANDU: Nepal champion Badri Lal Nepali and Madan Krishna Kayastha on Monday have taken joint lead with six points each in the Chakratirtha Cup FIDE Rating Chess Tournament being held at Chobhar. Nepali and Kayastha have earned six points at the end of round seven to come atop the points table.

Nepali shared point with Niraj Niraula in the sixth round and defeated Krishna Thapa in the seventh. Kayastha defeated Lawa Kumar Shrestha in the sixth round and Niraula in other.

Overnight leader Niraula is in the second position along with Keshav Shrestha and Rajan Puri. Krishna Thapa, Rajendra Prasad Shrestha, FM Sujendra Prasad Shrestha, Rajan Subedi, Nabin Tandukar, Lawa Kumar Shrestha, Herakaji Maharjan, Bijay Dangol, Rijendra Rajbhandari and Hari Krishna Shrestha have earned five points each.

Paras XI wins against Binod XI

KATHMANDU: Paras XI registered eight runs victory over Binod XI on Monday in its first practice match for the upcoming SAARC T20 Championship played at the TU Cricket Ground, Kirtipur. Winning the toss Paras XI elected to bat first and scored 134 losing eight wickets. Skipper Paras Khadka hammered 50 runs off 30 balls which included a boundary and four sixes. Gyanendra Malla scored 32 runs off 21 balls.

Avinash Karna and Shakti Gauchan grabbed two wickets each of Paras XI. Chasing the total of 135 runs Binod XI could manage only 127 runs losing nine wickets. Mehboob Alam´s not out 55 runs off 35 balls failed to steer the team towards victory.

Alam struck four boundaries and as many sixes for his half-century innings. Amrit Bhattarai destroyed Binod XI batting line up grabbing three wickets. Rahul BK took two wickets while Krishna Karki, Bhuwan Karki, Sharad Vesawakar and Paras Khadka shared a wicket each.

Bandipur wins Harka Gurung U-16 football

KATHMANDU: Bandipur Youth Club of Tanahu on Monday clinched the title of Dr Harka Gurung Memorial U-16 Football Tournament held in Lamjung. Bandipur defeated Triveni Youth Club of Mugling 2-1 during the final. Bandipur bagged a purse of Rs 15,000 along with running trophy while Triveni bagged Rs 8,000. Bandipur had taken 25th minute lead through Bhakta Bahadur Ale´s goal. But Samir Gurung hit back the equalizer in the 59th minute for Triveni.

Man Gurung hit the winning goal for Bandipur five minutes from time in the 70-minute match. Bhakta Ale of Bandipur was declared the best player while Pancha Gurung of Marshyangdi Youth Club, Man Gurung of Bandipur and Amir Gurung of Triveni were adjudged the best goalkeeper, midfielder and forward respectively. National volleyball player Sipora Gurung distributed prizes to the winner.

She also personally sponsored the jersey set for the host team. The tournament was organized by Lamjung United Football Club.
