KATHMANDU, Dec 30: The government is splitting the existing Department of Labor and Employment Promotion (DoLEP) into two separate departments, the Department of Labor, and the Department of Foreign Employment, from Wednesday. [break]

“All the processes for the split have been completed, and the two departments will start catering specialized services instantly from tomorrow,” Mohan Krishna Sapkota, director general of DoLEP told myrepublica.com.

Officials at the Ministry of Labor and Transport Management also expressed hope that the split would boost effective service delivery, and enable the government to efficiently cater better services to oversee job seekers and the domestic labor sector in a specialized manner.

According to Sapkota, the Department of Foreign Employment (DoFE) will have 59 employees in total, including a first-class officer, two second-class officers and 12 section officers. “The DoFE will be retained in the existing office building of DoLEP in Old Baneswor,” he stated.

Likewise, the Department of Labor (DoL), which is to be based in Bhainsepati of Lalitpur, will have 27 staff, including one first-class officer, two second-class officers and seven section officers.

The DoLEP split has been done as per a provision made by the Foreign Employment Act. The decision to split resulted from a meeting of ministers a couple of weeks ago. Before the split, the DoLEP had 43 posts, including senior officials.
