A sedate activity is one in a which a person engages in a calm and composed manner, such as being either glued to the TV, or taking a brisk morning walk, or plain pottering in the garden. Each one of these takes some attention but it is better than just sitting around and being an onlooker on the scene.



Staring at the small screen for too long can turn the individual into a couch potato if it persists for more than six hours at a stretch.[break] The mind is so preoccupied that any disturbance leaves him in a bewildered state of mind. Fiddling with the remote control is just about the only exercise he gets. Snacking on junk foodstuffs or sipping cold drinks can add extra calories and a piling of fat on an already bulky body.



While taking a morning walk is good, it could be the only physical exertion one gets throughout the rest of the day. Walking tones up the leg muscles and involves a minimum of effort but it can be done even when the mind is preoccupied with its own thoughts. There are benefits, to be sure, but this regimen should be followed on a daily basis. No excuses here, if there is to be a net cumulative effect.



Engaging in gardening has its plus points if the spading, digging and pulling out the weeds produces sweat. There is nothing like putting off a tight schedule and engage in what is an activity even if one professes scant knowledge about it. The backyard, which was once an eyesore, turns out to be a landscape with trimmed hedges and a variety of flowers in full bloom. Truly, a lovely sight to behold!



These instances summarize in brief those activities devoid of any frills or excitement. The drudgery could be deadening, but one can do something while the urge is still strong. Else, one will have missed the opportunity. This could be made part of the routine and as a break from self-absorption. It takes only a moment before the realization that it can well be fostered and nurtured.



This is not to say that one should opt for a sedate activity because it has in-built advantages. Trying to break from the nutshell is recommended at this stage, and must be taken in all good faith. It needs a firm and dedicated approach to make it work without too much fuss or fanfare.



Giving into the temptation may be done in a jiffy, but it proves harmful in the long run. Where there was an option before, now one has to forego it, which can bring its unwanted aftereffects. Trying to sweat the stuff could be worth every effort. Going that extra mile will bring in benefits, and gives one a chance to recover from the monotony of life.



Perhaps the day will not be far off when a sedate activity will prove itself worthy. Only then can there be a semblance of order and a return to normalcy. This may be borne out in a zest for life is not to be missed but allowed free plays.
