KATHMANDU, May 7: Student unions and civil society groups have continued their protests against the Constitutional Council´s recommendation to the president to appoint Lok Man Singh Karki as the chief of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA).

While agitating student unions affiliated to various political parties on Tuesday enforced a two-hour vehicular strike in front of all the campuses across the Kathmandu Valley, civil society groups staged a sit-in for one hour beginning 4 pm at UCPN (Maoist) headquarters. [break]Student leaders had also reached the president´s office in the afternoon to hand over a memorandum to the president asking him not to appoint Karki as the chief of CIAA.

Karki was indicted by the Rayamajhi Commission, which was formed to investigate into atrocities perpetrated by then government and security officials against peaceful protestors in 2006.

The agitating student unions have announced nationwide demonstrations on Wednesday and Valley banda on Thursday if the decision to appoint Karki is not revoked.

The civil society group had earlier announced an hour-long sit-in outside the central offices of Nepali Congress and CPN-UML on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively. They have argued that a person with a tainted image does not deserve to be the chief of CIAA.

Meanwhile, issuing a statement, CPN-Maoist-affiliated Progressive Lawyers´ Association has said the proposed appointment of Karki as the chief of CIAA has drawn their attention. While denouncing the move of the Regmi-led poll government and the four parties to recommend Karki, the association has expressed solidarity with the ongoing protests.
