This was revealed in a monitoring carried out by the Department of Education (DoE) after voices were raised over the high fees being collected by the private schools at the start of the new academic year.[break]
It may be noted that the District Education Office concerned determines the fees after classifying the private schools on the basis of cost proportion every year. There are some 10,000 private school operating in the country.
A report of the monitoring carried out in 48 private schools of different districts was presented before a meeting on Monday of the Central Fees Determination and Monitoring Committee held at the office of the Director General of the DoE, Haribol Khanal.
Some schools were found to have been taking from students an amount up to Rs. 77,000 at a time in the name of annual fees, it is stated in the report. Some of those schools in the valley include Chelsea International, Chandbagh, Rato Bangala, Javiers International, Pathshala Nepal and GEMS academy.
At the meeting, Director of the DoE, Dilli Ram Rimal said as the monitors carried out the survey based on a questionnaire, it would be difficult to say that all the schools have the same problem. But the Government would stress on the need for private schools to run as per the Education Act.
Based on the conclusion of the report, a circular shall be sent to the concerned District Education Offices to enforce the existing Act and Regulations.
President of Guardians Association and member of the Committee, Suprabhat Bhandari said the report was discussed following pressure from the Association, and demanded action against the schools violating the act and regulations.
