KATHMANDU, Jan 15: President Dr Ram Baran Yadav said on Thursday that he is deeply shocked by the murder of journalist Uma Singh.

“I am deeply shocked by the brutal murder,” he said while talking to the representatives of a central level delegation of the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) here on Thursday. The journalists led by FNJ Chairman Dharmendra Jha submitted a memorandum over the issue to the president.
Some 15-20 unidentified assailants had attacked her with sharp weapons at her residence in Janakpur on Sunday night. She breathed her last while being rushed to Kathmandu for treatment.
Yadav described attack on press as attack on democracy.
“It pained me more also because the place where the brutal incident took place is my neighborhood,” Yadav, who hails from Janakpur and won election in Constituent Assembly from the same district, added.
FNJ Chairman Jha urged the head of the state to take initiatives for a thorough investigation into the case and ensure journalists’ security.
The President pledged that he would take any initiative possible.
Earlier, the delegation reached the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar in the morning to submit its memorandum to Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal but it returned without submitting the memorandum.
“We decided to return without meeting the prime minister as he did not give us time even after we waited for an hour,” FNJ General Secretary Poshan KC told myrepublica.com.
The delegation was scheduled to submit a memorandum regarding the murder of journalist Uma Singh to Dahal at 9:45 a.m. They stayed there until 10:45 a.m. and headed towards the President’s office to submit a separate memorandum over the same issue.
Meanwhile, Kathmandu chapter of FNJ earlier staged a sit-in in front of the Home Ministry demanding action against the culprits. The sit-in continued for half-an-hour starting 11:15 a.m., said our correspondent Kosh Raj Koirala.
