KATHMANDU, Feb 10: Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai has accused the rival parties of promoting corruption in the government agencies and trying to accuse “rest of others” of being corrupt.

“Those who had set a record in corruption in the past and promoted corruption in the state organs and society have been accusing others of being corrupt,” the prime minister said addressing a function organized by the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) on Sunday.

Stating that the government is committed to further strengthening CIAA and curbing corruption, he claimed that his government couldn´t appoint commissioners due to dissolution of the Constituent Assembly (CA) in May last year. CIAA has remained without any commissioner for years.

“I am very sad that the process of appointing chief and other commissioners in CIAA was in the final stage but was terminated after the demise of the legislature parliament,” said the prime minister. Having no commissioner, CIAA is currently being run by civil servants and the prime minister hoped that the bureaucrats would shoulder the responsibility efficiently.

In the fiscal year 2068-69, altogether 8,839 complaints were filed at CIAA and of them the anti-corruption body registered 111 cases in the special court. Of the cases, 86 were related to using fake academic certificates, 11 to financial embezzlement, 10 on bribery and four cases were related to various other charges.

During the period, departmental action were taken in 14 cases based on the CIAA´s findings, those accused in six cases were alerted and various other forms of actions were taken against the accused in 84 cases.
