In a meeting held with the party´s office bearers at his residence, Koirala expressed worries that the party´s organization had weakened in the villages for years. “I do not have any idea what you think about it,” NC Vice President Gopal Man Shrestha quoted Koirala as saying in the meeting. “But I have felt that the party´s organization has turned very weak at the village level.” [break]
According to Shrestha, Koirala asked the party´s office bearers to make the organization strong to withstand the challenge facing the country. Koirala was particularly concerned about differing views coming out from the NC leaders on major issues.
The meeting came in the wake of some party leaders calling for the dissolution of current government and formation of new government against the party´s official position.
Koirala also suggested the party´s office bearers to hold the 12th general convention at the earliest. A central committee meeting held on Thursday to finalize the convention date had failed to take any decision on the matter as the party leaders differed on the issue.
While a section of the party leaders have suggested holding the convention starting May 10, others have suggested holding it from June 10. Some leaders have even suggested holding the convention in mid-August.
A central committee meeting scheduled for Tuesday is set to determine the date of the convention.
In the meeting, Koirala also informed that he took up the issue of CPN-UML taking unilateral decisions on various issues including key appointments to Prime Minister Madhav Nepal during a meeting Saturday.
The meeting also dwelt on the issues of peace process and constitution drafting. According to Shrestha, NC reiterated its demand for a high level state restructuring commission to determine the number of federal states and delineating their boundaries.
