Prabal’s debut show on the runway at The Salon, one of the three venues at the tents in Bryant Park, was one of the most highly anticipated shows this season. [break]
Indeed, on February 12, just one day before Prabal’s show, the Wall Street Journal ran an article tilted, ‘Next Big Thing? All eyes are on Prabal Gurung.’
The same day America’s NBC television network’s website also ran a video segment titled ‘One To Watch: Prabal Gurung.’ But those would be stale headlines to anyone who had been following fashion news for weeks leading up to the New York Fashion Week Fall 2010 Collections that started on February 11.
The expectations only ran higher when Prabal was announced as one of the seven Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation winners on January 4 this year.

On Saturday, February 13, as the show got ready to start, Vogue magazine’s editor Anna Wintour arrived for Prabal’s show and went straight to the backstage area and wished the young designer luck.
Then she and her daughter Bee Shaffer took their seats in the front row and waited for the show to start. Others in the front row of the packed house included actress Zoe Saldana (Avatar, Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl), the celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe, and the former US President George Bush’s daughter Barbara Bush.
For most parts, both before and after the show, the designer seemed calm backstage. Before as well as after the show, much of the time was spent giving a series of interviews to newspapers and television channels.
On Monday, February 15, Prabal once again had his clothes on the runway. This time in a group event of this year’s Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation winners recognized as emerging fashion designers.
Prabal Gurung’s namesake high-end fashion line was launched exactly a year ago at the New York Fashion Week. The Fall 2010 collection that he showcased on Saturday and Monday is his third collection.
His first year has received tremendous critical and a steadily growing commercial success as previously written about in two separate articles in this very newspaper’s January 8, 2010, and October 2, 2009, editions.
Presented here are images from Prabal Gurung’s Fall 2010 collection as showcased at both his shows during last week’s New York Fashion Week, with excerpts of some of the reviews his show and collection has drawn since.
