KATHMANDU, May 22: A secretariat meeting of Nepal Workers and Peasants Party (NWPP) on Friday decided to support the alliance led by the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) to form the new government.

However, the NWPP has said it will stay outside the government. Five lawmakers represent the party in the 601-member Constituent Assembly (CA).

"The UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal promised that the UML-led government would include the 18 points, which were raised by our party, in its program and would implement them with priority. Therefore, the secretariat meeting has directed our parliamentary party to vote for UML prime ministerial candidate Madhav Kumar Nepal," said a statement issued by the NWPP on Friday.

Earlier, 22 other political parties had decided to support the UML-led alliance to form the new government to be headed by senior UML leader Nepal.

With the NWPP decision, only two political parties (the largest party in the CA, Unified CPN (Maoist) that led the present coalition government and CPN (Unified)) have stood against the UML-led alliance. Two-hundred-and-thirty-eight lawmakers represent the Unified CPN (Maoist) in Parliament, and only two lawmakers represent the CPN (Unified) in the House.

Like the NWPP, Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal, Rastriya Janamorcha and CPN (United) too have decided to support the UML-led alliance staying outside the government.

Major political parties in Parliament on Thursday decided to hold the election for the new Prime Minister at 3 pm on Saturday.
