KATHMANDU: Traffic movement was disrupted Monday morning in a number of places as Nepal Students Union (NSU) staged chakkajam for an hour starting 9:30 a.m. in front of public colleges. The student wing of the main opposition party, the Nepali Congress, called the strike to protest against Sunday´s vandalism at Janapriya Multiple Campus in Pokhara by students, and against Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s recent remarks. The NSU also demanded cuts in transportation fares in tune with international crude prices.
“Our friends (NSU members) hoisted black flags in colleges across the country and staged a one-hour-long chakkajam in front of their colleges as protest,” NSU President Pradeep Poudel told myrepublica.com. He termed the incident at Janapriya Campus as an extreme case of educational anarchy. The campus had turned into a battlefield on Sunday as students unions indulged in arson and vandalism inside the campus. Campus Chief Sabita Baidya resigned from the post following the incident.
