“We cannot withdraw the candidacy for prime minister,” said NC Spokesperson Arjun Narsingh KC after a meeting with CPN-UML leaders on Wednesday. Acting President Sushil Koirala had led the NC team during the meeting.
“The NC leaders told us that they also agree on the agendas set by our party for consensus. But they differ on the process leading to consensus,” UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal told journalists after the meeting.
The recently held central committee meeting of the CPN-UML had set agendas for consensus among the parties. The agendas related to the peace process, including management of the Maoist combatants, return of the properties seized by Maoists, and constitution writing, among others.
The CPN-UML has urged the UCPN-M and NC to withdraw their respective candidacies, saying that the legislature parliament was unable to elect the new prime minister even after holding five rounds of voting.
But the Nepali Congress has been refusing calls to withdraw its candidacy, saying such a move would further complicate the problem.
The UCPN-M, which has fielded Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal for the prime minister´s post, has also shown its readiness to withdraw Dahal´s if the NC follows suit.
NC and UML leaders have agreed to hold further talks on the latter´s agendas for national consensus. UML has also held talks with other parties, including UCPN (Maoists), on its agendas.
