During the ongoing Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting on Thursday, NC Senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba and Acting Vice President Ram Chandra Poudel said NC needs to initiate talks with other political parties to forge unity and stop the Maoists from launching “decisive war.” [break]
Deuba and Poudel, who attended the High Level Political Mechanism (HLPM) meeting on Wednesday, had briefed the CWC meeting about the issues raised at the meeting. Both the leaders claimed that the Maoists were concerned solely on getting to the helm of power rather than promulgating new constitution and taking the ongoing peace process to a logical end.
Altogether nine NC leaders, including General Secretary Bimalendra Nidhi, Bal Bahadur Rai, Binaya Dhwoj Chanda, Narayan Khadka and Bhisma Raj Angdangbe, deliberated on the issue during Thursday´s CWC meeting. The leaders urged the party leadership to exert pressure on the Maoists to stop giving military training to their cadres.
Speaking at the meeting, General Secretary Nidhi stressed on the need to conclude peace process before promulgating the new constitution. He also proposed that the term of Constituent Assembly (CA) be extended as it would not be feasible to hold yet another CA election.
Nidhi added that the parties should also set deadline for Special Committee under Prime Minister to ensure supervision, integration and rehabilitation of the Maoists combatants. “The issue of management of the Maoist combatants should not be ignored while extending the CA term,” a CWC member quoted Nidhi as saying.
The next CWC meeting has been called for Friday.
