KATHMANDU, April 11: Nepal felt minor tremors off the massive earthquake that struck under the sea off Indonesia’s northern Aceh province.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 8.9 struck Aceh province triggering a tsunami warning across the Indian Ocean region.

“Nepal, including Kathmandu, felt the minor tremor of the earthquake in Indonesia,” Bharat Koirala, a seismologist at the National Seismology Center in Kathmandu confirmed.

Koirala added that the intensity of the tremor was little more in eastern Nepal. [break]

Meanwhile, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reportedly said it was not yet known whether a tsunami had been generated, but said authorities should ‘take appropriate action’.

The Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004 killed 170,000 people in Aceh.
