Marginal changes in veg, fruits prices

KATHMANDU, May 25: Prices of some vegetables, including tomatoes, have dropped in the market as compared to prices recorded a couple of weeks ago, thanks to improving supplies of fresh produces from farms. However, prices of some vegetables have increased over the period.



According to Kalimati Fruits and Vegetables Market Development Board, prices of popular vegetables like tomatoes, dry onions, carrots, green peas, pumpkin and broccoli have declined over the period. [break]



Prices of big tomatoes and small tomatoes went down to Rs 22 and Rs 25 per kg from Rs 36 and Rs 40 per kg respectively recorded two weeks ago. Onions and carrots are selling cheaper at Rs 17 and Rs 20 per kg from Rs 18 and Rs 22 per kg respectively over the period.



Prices of green peas, pumpkin and broccoli also dropped to Rs 45, Rs 18 and Rs 35 per kg from Rs 60, Rs 24 and Rs 40 per kg respectively.



Bharat Katiwada, president of Vegetables Wholesalers Association at the Kalimati market, informed myrepublica.com on Tuesday that vegetable prices have dropped significantly in the market due to improved supplies. He said around 800 tons of vegetables, fruits, spices and fish enter the Kalimati market ever day.



“Price of vegetables declined due to significant rise in supply from domestic farmers,” said Khaitwada.



However, some vegetables such as potatoes, cabbage, cauliflower, bitter gourd and mushroom became dearer as compared to the prices recorded a couple of weeks ago.



Price of red potatoes and white potatoes went up to Rs 24 and Rs 17 per kg from Rs 18 and Rs 16 per kg respectively. Similarly, mushroom and Nepali garlic are selling for Rs 350 and Rs 95 per kg, up from Rs 200 and Rs 90 per kg respectively recorded two weeks ago.



Prices of popular fruits like apple and banana declined to Rs 80 and Rs 60 per kg from Rs 110 and Rs 70 per kg respectively.
