DADELDHURA, April 18: Normal life in the far western development region was hit hard on the third day on Sunday due to the indefinite general strike called by the UCPN (Maoist) in Dadeldhura district.

The strike left vehicular transport in all seven districts in the region to a halt due to the strike called demanding release of their cadres arrested for thrashing Nepali Congress cadres.

The Maoists obstructed traffic movement since early morning in various sections of the Bhim Dutta Highway, the only highway linking to all seven districts in the region. Thousands of people were left stranded due to the obstruction.

Maoist cadres led by district committee member Jaya Bahadur Sarki had thrashed three NC cadres in Ajayameru VDC in the district last Friday. Police had arrested six Maoist cadres involved in the beating on the charge of murder attempt.

Local Maoists leaders said they will continue with the strike until the cadres are freed.
