KATHMANDU, Aug 20: Nepali Congress (NC) leader Dr Ram Sharan Mahat on Monday criticized the party leadership for its inability to resolve pending internal issues, including the naming of prime ministerial candidate from the party.

Mahat challenged that they themselves would resolve the disputes if the party’s three top leaders—President Sushil Koirala, Senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba and Vice-President Ram Chandra Paudel—keep fighting with one another for their own ‘ vested interests’. [break]

Speaking at a Reporters Club Nepal program in the capital, Mahat also accused Maoists of trying to seize state powers after dissolving the Constituent Assembly and argued that President Dr Ram Baran Yadav should not be silent in such a situation.

"The president should take steps to safeguard democracy and the constitution. He should not keep mum," Mahat said at a time when the ruling UCPN (Maoist) is charging the head of state with overstepping his constitutional limits for rejecting election-related ordinances.
