KATHMANDU, Dec 30: Eastern editions of Kantipur and The Kathmandu Post were published on Tuesday after five days of stoppage by employees of Kantipur Publications´ Biratnagar office.

The employees belonging to Communist party of Nepal (Maoist)-affiliated All Nepal Communication, Printing and Publications Workers´ Union (ANCPPWU) had prevented the printing of the two dailies since Thursday demanding better pay and work conditions as part of their 12-point demand. The current round of protest began on December 22.

On Monday, eastern region sub-committee of ANCPPWU, Biratnagar, issued a press release announcing withdrawal of its strike for a week following an agreement between Minister for Information and Communications Krishna Bahadur Mahara and Federation of Nepali Journalists the previous day.

On Sunday, the minister had reached an agreement with FNJ that Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal would pledge to the parliament his commitment to press freedom and security; 25 political parties would make a similar pledge; and the Home Ministry would issue circular to district administration for taking action against violators of press freedom. On the other hand, Kantipur Publications management assured the FNJ of looking into legitimate demands of the protesting workers.
