KATHMANDU, Aug 17: Demand for interior designers has risen sharply in the market as the season for renovation of individual homes and commercial establishments has begun, ahead of upcoming festivals and peak tourist season. With the change in living standard and lifestyle, the need for intelligent and optimum utilization of space is felt more strongly than ever before.

The solution lies with interior designers, who specialise in the art and science of space management. As this is the time most of the offices and complexes go for an image makeover, big names in interior designing are all booked for the entire season, making it difficult to hire them on a short notice. "Until some years ago, only Auto CAD was used for designing but these days introduction of software like 3D Max and SketchUp has made designing easier and faster," says Kanchan Agrawal, interior designer at Better Homes, a company specially dealing with kitchen designing. Besides, builders hire designers to make proper utilization of space and also to attract its client.

Leading interior designers in the city claim people have a sense for home decoration but decoration and designing are two different things. "In our country people still have a misconception about designing and decoration. Decoration is just a part of designing," Hashana Shrestha, a freelance interior designer, says.

Hashana further adds that introduction of interior designing courses by some institutions and growing professional excellence in the designing field have contributed to a spurt in the demand for designers.

According to designers while designing one should keep in mind natural source of light, artificial lights, availability of space, color combination, furniture, soft furnishing upholstery, and designs of the materials used besides the basic Vaastu.

As the demand for interior designers has increased, companies dealing with architectural designing have also started providing interior designing service. Better Homes, Deco Unique, Ego Decorators are among the few organizations which provide interior designing services apart from architectural services.

Designers say that concept of hiring designers for personal houses has gained momentum lately and this is mainly due to introduction of different types of designing software, people´s exposure to foreign lands and designs, and impact of Internet and foreign TV channels. However, an architect and a designer are again two different things with distinctly separate roles. An architect designs the building while the designer makes most of the limited space, say interior designers.

As demand for interior designers has increased in the market, individuals and organizations are facing problem in signing up these designers when needed. "I have been searching for an interior designer for my home at Kuleswor for quite a few months but I am not able to get one to my satisfaction," says Laxmi Shrestha, proprietor of Pals Beauty Parlor.

These days new color themes, patterns, texture, lightening styles are used in designing a room, homes, offices or shopping complexes. "Every individual or organization tries to stand out among others so they hire competent designers for that," says Hashana.

On an average the companies charge Rs 4,245 per square feet. However, the price varies on the volume of work, time spent and effort made. The companies dealing with designing provide 1 to 2 years´ service warranty and 5 to 6 years´ durability.
