BARDIBAS, Nov 30: Inmates of the Mahottari Jail have been compelled to live in tents as more than three folds of inmates are kept over the capacity.

The jail has 382 inmates in the jail, whereas it has a capacity of 135, said the jail administration. [break]

The number has increased as offices continue to send inmates despite lack of space, said Jail Chief Shovendra Thakur.

The inmates said their condition has been deteriorating in the winter as they have to live under tents.

There is no stoppage of sending inmates even if it has been written to the local administration and Jail Department on the jail’s capacity, said Thakur.

It is also difficult to make arrangements for their treatment for lack of budget, the office said.

Human rights organizations have drawn the attention of the local administration to make proper arrangement for the increased number of inmates.

There are now 38 women and 336 male inmates and eight children dependent on them.
