KATHMANDU, June 15: The hall of Advanced College of Engineering and Management was abuzz with excitement. In the middle of the hall was a ‘U’ shaped platform. This was the battleground where 15 teams would compete against each other to successfully use their self-made machines (vehicles made out of easily available resources) to complete the task.

“Although this is a competition, no matter who wins or loses, the victory will belong to all of Nepal’s engineering students,” commented Prashant Ghimire, who is the Advisor and former Vice President of Advanced College of Engineering and Management.[break]

Organized by the Advanced Robotics Club (ARC), the event was titled ‘Sanitizing Kathmandu’ and focused on using robotics to give the students a sense of how the waste in Kathmandu can be managed in order to make the city more cleaner. The task the participants were supposed to master was to collect table tennis balls, representing waste, and to successfully collect it along the path that was built, using a remote-control operated device.

“The task is somewhat difficult,” shared Madan Dhungana, a participant who is currently in his 2nd year of Bachelors in Computer Technology at Advanced College of Engineering and Management. Mostly interested in Artificial Intelligence, Dhungana shares that the competition was a learning experience. “We took part and found out that our robot has a problem. Now we know what we did wrong,” he says.

The competition took place after a three-day training program which was organized by ARC. “This closed camp gave the students hands on experience,” shares advisor Ghimire who adds that for the new generation of students, it’s very important to put theoretical knowledge to practical use. This robotics event was an attempt at doing just that.
