BIRGUNJ: Businessmen and industrialists in this industrial hub called off an indefinite strike that had thrown the normal life out of gear for last two days, Wednesday evening.

Birgunj Chambers of Commerce and Industries (BCCI) announced the end to the strike, which was called demanding security in the town in the wake of the killing on Monday of a local businessman Rajesh Kyal, after reaching an agreement with the local administration.

During a tripartite meeting between BCCI representative Sushil Dhuraka, Chief District Officer Shankar Koirala and family members of Kyal, Koirala agreed to forward BCCI´s demands to Kathmandu and beef up the security in the town.

Throughout the day on Wednesday, most of the shops downed their shutters after groups of protesters, brandishing clubs in their hands, made a tour of the town to enforce the strike.

A group of unidentified gunmen had shot at Rajesh Kyal, who succumbed to his injuries shortly after the shooting, Monday evening. The town remained very tense on Tuesday due to sporadic demonstrations held by various groups.
