Itchy, dry and flaky skin can be very unpleasant. And during winters, this is one common problem. Do you think your skin is destined to be dry and flaky until spring comes? Are you sick of frizzy hair and chapped lips? Dropping temperatures and cold winds don’t have to go hand in hand with frizzy hair and dry, sullen skin and hair. Try these simple tactics to keep yourself lovely throughout the harsh winter and beyond.
Oil therapy
Rub on some olive, almond or coconut oil and massage lightly on to your hands, legs and the rest of your body before heading for a shower. Better yet, if time permits, heat the oil and then apply before taking bath. You can only opt to oil your hair prior to washing it to make it silky and shiny.[break]
Scoop some milk cream
Milk cream makes for a very good moisturizer. Mix a few drops of lime, a teaspoon of milk and two teaspoons of milk cream and rub onto your hands and legs. Leave it on for a while before you head for the shower. You’ll see the difference immediately.
Good ol’ curd
Curd makes for excellent skin hydration, and its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties will help soothe your dry, itchy skin. Apply curd just as it is or mix it with some honey and a few drops of lime. Leave it on for at least 10 minutes before you wash it off. It’s sure to do wonders for your skin.
Honey wonders
Honey helps lock in moisture, has antioxidant and anti-microbial properties, which makes it a sought-after ingredient in many over-the-counter skincare products. Lightly heat two teaspoons of honey and apply it onto your skin (face, hands, legs) while it’s warm. Leave it on for 15 minutes, and then wash it off. There’s nothing better your skin can ask for.
Dab on some aloe vera
If you don’t have an aloe plant at home as yet, then make a trip to the nearest nursery and get one, because aloe is super good for your skin. After bath, slice a piece of aloe, squeeze all the gel out and apply onto your face, hands or legs. It’ll not only moisturize your skin, it’ll also form a protective layer that will keep impurities from entering your pores. While aloe is a good skin hydration agent, it can also leave your skin feeling tight.
Try creamy facial cleansers
Cleansers strip away moisture as part of the job of removing makeup, and dry winter air tends to magnify the problem. Gel cleansers can be very drying, so stick to cream-base ones. Don’t over-wash your face, though. Twice a day is more than enough. Try Neutrogena Deep Clean Cleanser or Himalaya Foaming Facial Wash for desired results.

Exfoliate
Dead cells tend to pile up in winter and prevent the moisturizer from getting to the healthy skin. Regular washing won’t get rid of these dead cells, so don’t forget to exfoliate with a good facial scrub. Once or twice a week will suffice. Try Ever Youth Walnut Scrub or Himalaya Apricot Scrub for proper effects.
Lather sunscreen
It may be cold but you still need UV protection everyday to help ward off wrinkles, premature aging and the threat of skin cancer. You can opt to make sun protection part of your routine by using a liquid makeup with SPF, like Maybelline. Also try Lotus Sunscreens or VLCC Sunscreens.
Nourish skin overnight
On the up side of longer nights, you’ll have more time to moisturize while you sleep. Look for a hydrating formula that helps prevent and repair damage to your skin’s surface for firmer-looking skin every morning. Try Olay Total Effects or Ponds Age Miracle for the purpose.
Pucker up
Chapped lips can be a big problem in winter. Use a lip balm with at least SPF 15 and preferably one with antiseptic agents to aid in healing. Some lip balm products are made with tea tree oil, which helps heal painful cracks. You can also try rubbing some Boroline on your lips before retiring to wake up to smooth luscious lips. Try VLCC Mandarin Lip Shield or The Body Shop Shea lip butter for satisfactory results.
Care for your hair
Dandruff symptoms can get worse in cold, dry seasons with less sunlight. But that’s no reason to hide under your hat. A gentle pH-balanced shampoo will give you a clean, manageable and virtually flake-free hair from roots to tips. Try Dove Daily Shine Shampoo or Head & Shoulders Classic Clean Shampoo.
