Athlete begins Everest expedition

KATHMANDU, April 11: Long distance runner Sanjaya Pandit set out on an expedition to Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest) on Wednesday. He plans to climb the world´s highest peak in May this year.



Pandit who is a student at the Golden Gate College here was seen off by Principal Ramesh Silwal, at a function held today. Principal Silwal handed over the college´s banner to Pandit.[break]



On the occasion, Pandit said he is climbing Mt. Sagarmatha with the objective of promoting different tourist and religious sites in his home district of Pyuthan ´from the height of the Mt. Everest´.



After his ascent of Mt. Everest, Pandit will become the first athlete in the world to have climbed the world´s highest mountain.



Earlier, Pandit has run a distance of 2,100 kilometres and has also climbed the 6189-metres-high Iceland Peak.
