BAGLUNG, March 13: UCPN (Maoist) Spokesperson Dina Nath Sharma on Saturday alleged that Nepal Army (NA) was trying to become a centre of regressive forces.

Sharma said the army chief´s remark against bulk integration of Maoist combatants into the national army goes against the spirit of peace accord and interim constitution. "Nepal Army does not have the authority to speak that bulk integration of the Maoist combatants cannot be made," he said. [break]

Chief of Army Staff General Chhatra Man Singh Gurung during his meeting with the visiting UN Under-Secretary General for Political Affairs B Lynn Pascoe on Friday ruled out bulk integration of Maoist combatants.

Addressing the second convention of Nepal Revolutionary Health Workers´ Association, Baglung chapter, Sharma argued that elements not wanting peace were inciting Nepal Army and the president to derail the peace process.

"The army has given provocative statement against peace process," he said, adding: "Conspiracies are afoot to turn Nepal into Burma, Afghanistan and Pakistan by inviting civil war." He said foreign elements are making efforts to bring instability in the country and that there has been danger of army being used for the purpose.

He said there is slim chance of promulgating new constitution by May 28 as extreme rightist elements within the Nepali Congress have been active in recent days. He pointed out the need of consensus among major political parties to bail the country out of the current deadlock.
