The 28th September advocates working on the right of access to information around the world. [break]
Freedom of information has been internationally agreed as a fundamental human right so as to ensure easy access of the general public to information of public importance and private concerns.
Article 27 of the Interim Constitution of Nepal has guaranteed the right to information as a fundamental right of citizens and the Right to Information Act-2007 and Regulation-2008 formulated on the basis of this constitutional provision are in place.
Though RTI has been invariably used as a strong toll to check massive corruption, exact social accountability and improve governance in various countries mainly India, Bangladesh and the Philippines, its use is still not that much effective in Nepal.
The basic principle of the right to information is to ensure good governance by giving citizens a sense of ownership towards public agencies through maximum openness of information.
´The RTI guarantees the taxpayers right to know the information as to how and where the money they pay to the state has been spent´, said Freedom Forum, a lead organization working in the field of right to information.
To mark the day, a morning rally from Babarmahal to New Baneswor has been organized at the call of Freedom Forum on September 28, Friday. Various organizations including Nepal Press Institute (NPI), Initiative for Democracy and Dialogue (IDD) are joining the rally.
With the campaigns of information requests, the right to information is taking root in Nepal.
