Those facing disciplinary action over the last one month include one sub-inspector, four assistant sub-inspectors, two head constables and three constables serving under Kathmandu Range Office. The action was taken following complaints received at the PSU.
The PSU was set up on Dec 24, 2008 amidst complaints from various quarters that police on duty were misbehaving or attempting to take bribes from persons coming for their help. Newly-appointed chief of Kathmandu Range Office, Superintendent of Police Nawa Raj Silwal, had taken the initiative in this connection.
According to details provided by the Range Office, those facing action were found to have beaten up and misbehaved towards members of the general public, engaged in heavy drinking and asked for money for services they are supposed to deliver the public.
Four of those facing action have been given ´warnings´ and three others were given ´serious warnings´ following thorough investigation of the complaints. Investigations against two of the police personnel are still underway. Police have not made public their names ´to help them improve their conduct.´
Talking to media persons at his office, SP Silwal said the disciplinary move has helped make police personnel, especially those in the lower rungs, responsible toward their professional duties. “We are happy to receive an overwhelming response from the general public,” he said.
Silwal asked the entire public to file any complaints they have against misbehaving police personnel by telephone or e-mail. One can file a complaint by calling 4258317 or 9849023999 (cell) and through e-mail to ktmpsu@nepalpolice.gov.np. “Complaints can also be made verbally or through letters,” he added.
