KATHMANDU, Aug 21: The wholesale price of Nepali large tomatoes has decreased in the Kalimati vegetable market today.

KATHMANDU, Aug 11: India has started importing tomatoes from Nepal. Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharanam made an announcement in the lower house of India’s bicameral parliament (Lok Sabha) on Thursday that they have started bringing tomatoes from Nepal.

POKHARA, Aug 6: In mid-June, farmers demonstrated by throwing tomatoes on the streets of Kathmandu stating that they did not get a fair price. At that time, farmers had thrown tomatoes on the streets in the capital mentioning that their tomatoes were not sold even at Rs 10 per kg. While in the capital,  tomatoes  were being thrown on the streets. In Pokhara at that time, the retail price of tomatoes was Rs 70 per kg.

The incident of farmers dumping over 92,000 kilograms of tomatoes in Kalimati on Sunday, as they were unable to sell them even at a meager price of Rs 4 per kilogram, serves as a distressing reminder of the pressing need to establish a fair market for our hardworking agricultural community. Our farmers form the backbone of our nation's economy and are the unsung heroes who work tirelessly day and night to ensure our food security. Witnessing their labor go to waste due to the inability to sell their produce at reasonable rates is truly disheartening.

A myth among tomato lovers is that home-grown tomatoes taste best. Not true! The best varieties of tomatoes are what taste best, whether they’re grown on a farm or in a backyard.
