KATHMANDU, Nov 20: The voter turnout stood at only 23 percent in Thawang of Rolpa district in the elections to the members of House of Representatives and provincial assembly held on Sunday.

Thawang finally ready for polls

LIWANG, June 19: Thawang, the bastion of the decade-long Maoist insurgency, is finally gearing up for the elections after boycotting several polls in the past. The election constituency is witnessing stiff competitions among parties formed after splitting from the former rebel Maoist party. Other parliamentary parties such as Nepali Congress and CPN-UML which were seen as rivals of the then rebel party are also competing in the historic local elections after a gap of 20 years.

ROLPA, June 11: Nepal Army has started breaking the rocky hills of Sirkyang which had been considered a major barrier to road connectivity to Thawang, the origin of the decade-long Maoist insurgency.

ROLPA, May 23: The long-neglected Thawang Rural Municipality of Rolpa district, the bastion of the decade-long Maoist insurgency, is all set to hold the local elections on June 14 as the election fever rises.

DANG, April 17: Kamal Rokka, an exiled Nepali Congress leader of Rolpa's Thawang village, recently got a phone call from a political rival of his village which is popularly known as the bastion of Maoist insurgency.  The caller was an influential left-wing leader of Thawang, who until recent was against holding the local elections. However, the call was to offer his support and express his interest in conducting the local polls in Thawang by setting aside their differences.

ROLPA, March 19: The Nepali Congress' Rolpa leadership has received a grand welcome from the locals of Thawang, the place of origin of the decade – long Maoist insurgency.
