The concept of marriage is closely tied to procreation and the traditional gender roles of a man and a woman. This has led to a lack of explicit discourse on same-sex marriage within the Hindu religion. The emphasis on procreation in marital unions has made it difficult for society to accept and acknowledge the legitimacy of same-sex unions.

NEPALGUNJ, Feb 13: Anjudevi Shrestha,33, from Badhaiyatal-2, Bardiya and Suprita Gurung, also 33, from  Bandipur-5, Tanahun began dating about five years ago and tied the knot according to their tradition. However, they did not receive a legal marriage certificate at that time.

KATHMANDU, Dec 1: "We all got justice," Babu Dumi, an activist of sexual and minority rights and queer community, said, "Nepal has succeeded in changing its history. We have got justice despite facing challenges.” The marriage of Ram Bahadur Gurung and Surendra Pandey was officially registered in Dordi Rural Municipality of Lamjung on Wednesday. Surendra of Kawasoti Municipality-8 of Nawalparasi and Ram Bahadur of Dordi Rural Municipality-2 of Lamjung got married. This marks the first constitutional same-sex marriage in Nepal. Their marriage was registered on the basis of an interim order passed by the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court of Nepal has issued an interim order to the government, instructing it to temporarily allow the registration of same-sex marriage and other non-traditional heterosexual couples. It was a landmark decision for the same-sex couples as well as individuals identifying themselves as part of the LGBTIQA+ community.

WASHINGTON, Nov 30: The U.S. Senate passed a bill on Tuesday that would protect federal recognition of same-sex marriage, a measure taken up in response to worries the Supreme Court could overturn a 2015 decision that legalized it nationwide.
