KATHMANDU, Jan 21: The local government’s initiative to list Panauti, a historical, religious, cultural and archaeological city of Kavrepalanchowk, in the UNESCO World Heritage Site list, has reached its final stage.

KAVREPALANCHOWK, August 2: African swine fever infection has been detected in pigs reared commercially in various firms in Panauti town of Kavrepalanchowk district.

The Barhabarse Makar Mela, a month-long festival, began on January 15 (Magh 1 of the Nepali month) in Panauti. The district officials in Kavre though had ordered to cancel the festivity on January 11 due to the impending threat of COVID-19. Local devotees, on the other hand, have decided to hold it. This year it continues till February 12.

BANEPA, Oct 14: The construction of Kavre Valley Drinking Water Supply Project, which was expected to be completed within two years from the date of agreement with the Chinese company, is yet to be completed even after more than six years.

The festival includes gods/goddess Brahmyani, Indreswor Shiva, Bhadrakali and Unmanta Bhairav and their idols are taken out from their respective temples for the celebration. The significance of this festival, however, lies in the fact that it is celebrated as a means to bring rainfall. Thus, it is considered a bad omen should rain not grace the festivities.

‘Changes in Panauti’ is set to start from Thursday at Dhalko Bato, Pulchowk. The event is organized by Alliance Française Kathmandu.

With support of some locals and NGOs, it is taking lead to make itself a green haven. According to its Mayor, Bhim Neupane, the municipality has already taken steps towards the realizing that goal.
