Loneliness has become an epidemic in the modern world with more than 40 percent of the population in countries like the United States and the United Kingdom admitting to feeling lonely, a figure which would suggest that the rate of loneliness has doubled in the past 40 years.

Research has linked common mental disorders to loneliness felt by individuals in solo living arrangements. Lacking social relationships caused by living alone may trigger anxiety, mood disorders, and substance abuse.

The pressure to present the "perfect" life on social media could be a factor.

Loneliness is a feeling of emptiness or hollowness inside you. You feel isolated or separated from the world, cut off from those you would like to have contact with. Loneliness is just a passive state. Its intensity increases if one has nothing to do or stays passive. Another reason that a person falls prey to loneliness is not being socially active.
