Combating Gender-Based Violence in Nepal

The data indicates a troubling trend in which the majority of the offenders in gender-based violence cases are men. This emphasizes the importance of involving men and boys as essential change agents in the battle against gender-based violence.

KATHMANDU, Nov 27: The US Embassy in Kathmandu has launched an online campaign to amplify voices against gender-based violence.

KATHMANDU, Nov 26: Of all the gender-based violence recorded in the country, 80 percent cases are found to be domestic violence. According to the Nepal Police data, 53 percent of the cases of domestic violence  are physical violence and 47 percent cases are related to mental violence.

KATHMANDU, Jan 24: The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) entered into a partnership on Monday with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to support NHRC’s effort for promoting human rights, gender equality, sexual and reproductive health rights, and combating gender-based violence (GBV) and harmful practices.

KATHMANDU, Oct 14: A two-year project has been launched in Province 2 and Karnali Province to help minimize the instances of  gender-based violence in the provinces.

KATHMANDU, Sept 7: The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) on Monday launched the second phase of a project that seeks to reduce gender-based violence and discrimination against women and girls in two provinces. The project is launched in coordination with the Ministry of Women, Children and Senior Citizens (MoWCSC) and relevant provincial and local authorities, according to a press statement issued by the UNFPA.

KATHMANDU, Oct 23: Expressing its gratitude toward the notable progress made by Nepal in achieving the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) goals, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has pledged support to Nepal in meeting the strategic vision of achieving three zeros by 2030. The strategic vision of three zeros include zero unmet need for contraception and family planning, zero preventable maternal deaths, and zero gender-based violence and harmful practices.

KATHMANDU, Nov 28: In the four months since Nirmala Panta, the 13-year-old schoolgirl in Kanchanpur district, was raped and subsequently murdered, the issue of rape and other gender-based violence has remained the most talked-about issue. Civil society groups, informal social media groupings and several other networks launched awareness and pressure campaigns aimed at sensitizing the public about violence against women and girls.
