Visual images are powerful mediums in understanding people and the society. They help us memorialize the events of the past from the present. Last Friday (January 17), I was in North Bengal University, Siliguri, to attend International Seminar on State-Society Relationship in the Himalayas—organized by Centre for Himalayan Studies. There I presented a paper on the trajectory of anthropologist Dor Bahadur Bista and his seminal work People of Nepal, published in 1967. Along with my presentation, I had planned to display some of the photographs of Bista. Unfortunately, I couldn’t do so due to a technical hitch that occurred during my presentation.

Established in 1959, Tribhuvan University (TU) is a pioneer and highly esteemed institution of higher education in Nepal. It is one of the largest universities in the world in terms of number of students and national coverage. At present, there are 11 universities and six health institutions that provide higher education in Nepal. TU alone contributes to 80 percent share in this. TU has gained rich experiences of running programs and handling a large number of students.
The mess in Tribhuvan University—Nepal’s oldest public university where a vast majority of Nepalis go to pursue academic degrees—has run so deep and wide that, at times, it seems nobody will be able to intervene and bail it out of the current crisis. From extreme politicization to deteriorating quality of teaching and learning to dereliction of duty by the office bearers including professors and teachers to granting of affiliations to medical colleges without meeting infrastructure needs, TU has hogged the headlines for wrong reasons in recent times.
