KATHMANDU, Dec 20; It has been a year since Safalta Shrestha, 24, passed her bachelor's degree in sociology. She wants to pursue a master’s degree in psychology. Tribhuvan University has a provision where one-year post graduate degree in psychology is compulsory for students of other faculties to pursue a master’s degree in psychology. But so far, Tribhuvan University has not been able to open admission for this subject. As a result, Shrestha said that she was not able to enroll for the subject during the August intake last year due to the inordinate delay on part of the university.

Last Friday (January 17), I was in North Bengal University, Siliguri, to attend International Seminar on State-Society Relationship in the Himalayas—organized by Centre for Himalayan Studies. There I presented a paper on the trajectory of anthropologist Dor Bahadur Bista and his seminal work People of Nepal, published in 1967. Along with my presentation, I had planned to display some of the photographs of Bista. Unfortunately, I couldn’t do so due to a technical hitch that occurred during my presentation.

The mess in Tribhuvan University—Nepal’s oldest public university where a vast majority of Nepalis go to pursue academic degrees—has run so deep and wide that, at times, it seems nobody will be able to intervene and bail it out of the current crisis. From extreme politicization to deteriorating quality of teaching and learning to dereliction of duty by the office bearers including professors and teachers to granting of affiliations to medical colleges without meeting infrastructure needs, TU has hogged the headlines for wrong reasons in recent times.
