GANDAKI, July 16:  The insufficient supply of timber has resulted in the outflow of millions of rupees to foreign countries in the import of timber, furniture, aluminum and steel, according to available data. Aluminum and steel are used as alternatives to timber. On the contrary, timber worth hundreds of thousands of rupees is found rotting in the forests of Nepal.

KATHMANDU, July 24: Forty-five percent of the total land in the country is covered with forest. Despite this, the country's dependence on other countries for timber is growing.

RUKUM, April 20: Timber worth Rs 20 million is set to be extracted from a single village in Rukum in the current fiscal year. Preparations have been made to export timber worth Rs 18 million from two community forests alone in Bhume Rural Municipality-1.

SURKHET, Nov 24: About a month ago, locals of Barahatal Rural Municipality-4 in Surkhet had informed concerned stakeholders about rampant deforestation and timber smuggling in forest areas. Pagma Area Forest Office and Bheri Divisional Forest Office among other offices were informed about the misdeeds. Yet, none of the offices deployed their teams to investigate.

KATHMANDU, Dec 5: Reconstruction works of heritage site in Kathmandu valley and elsewhere have been hit hard by the shortage of long timber logs, authorities said.   Timber Corporation of Nepal (TCN) has said that it has no stock of long timber logs to provide for reconstruction of heritage sites damaged by the 2015 earthquake.
