Mr. Uthal-puthal in doldrums

March 20, 2024 08:30 am

During his first parliamentary test in January 2023, PM Dahal secured 99% of the votes. He boasted this as a historical, unprecedented event in Nepali politics. During the second test in February 2023, it plummeted down to 64%. Now the figure stands at 59%. There is more of a puthal (downward movement) than an uthal (upward movement) in the vote of confidence.

Nepal awoke to the tragic news early morning on Tuesday, as the sudden demise of Subash Chandra Nembang sent shockwaves through the nation's political landscape. At the age of 70, Nembang, the chairman of the Constituent Assembly and vice chairman of the main opposition party, CPN-UML, succumbed to a heart attack at his private residence in Baluwatar, marking the end of an era in Nepali politics.

The history of Nepali politics and constitution is both complex and fascinating, spanning over 80 years. It can be traced back to the Rana oligarchy, which was eventually overthrown by a political movement. King Tribhuvan Bir Bikram Shah and his successor Mahendra ruled for approximately eight years, followed by BP Koirala, the first prime minister elected by the people, who served for three years.

Badge of honor

February 21, 2020 10:37 am

During the Panchey days, it was a badge of honor for our netas of today to be in prison for being courageous enough to fight against the system. They did suffer a lot and were always in danger of being killed by the state. Today, the story is different. We, the people, cannot speak against the same honest netas of yesterday who are now corrupt savages. Instead, when our courts send our netas to prison, our cadres go crazy as if we were sending an honest and respectable person to prison. And when our netas are released, our cadres go crazy once again as if one of our own had gone to mars and have come back home as a hero.

What went wrong?

October 27, 2019 01:00 am

Everything might look honky dory from outside, but several challenges stare Nepali politics at the moment, some of them with roots in happenings of a decade back. The first is Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) signed on November, 2016 between the government and warring Maoist. It was probably the first agreement of its kind in the world in which the agreement was signed more with the partners in peace than between the parties in conflict. Parties in conflict at the time were royal palace and Maoists. Agreement should have been between the two. Instead, agreement was signed between the Maoist and the parties which together were in anti-monarchy movement. Nowhere else are agreements signed between the partners in peace. This makes the peace accord fundamentally flawed.

KATHMANDU, Aug 19: Senior leader of ruling Nepal Communist Party Madhav Kumar Nepal is preparing to present a ‘note of dissent’ citing that the minute of recent secretariat meeting of the party failed to properly incorporate policy-related issues.
