EC reviews local election

KATHMANDU, July 1: The Election Commission (EC) has reviewed the May 13 local level election.

Nonpartisan local elections are desirable for several reasons. The main ones being that the locally-elected leaders are directly implementing location-specific programs while being close to the residents of their jurisdictions.

DANG, May 25: CPN-UML candidates Tikaram Khadka and Syani Chaudhary have been elected as the mayor and deputy mayor of Tulsipur Sub-metropolis, respectively, of Dang. Khadka won against his closest rival from the ruling coalition Gehendra Giri of Nepali Congress (NC) with 39,408 votes while Giri had received 27,717 votes.

For nearly last two years after the local elections were held in 2017 to bring governance to the people’s doorsteps, Nepal’s local governance system has largely earned a bad fame.
