2019 was an action packed year for K-pop. Although the year will be remembered by many as one of the saddest in K-pop history because of the many disbandments, members ominously leaving their groups, many scandals and, most importantly, the passing of two big stars, Sulli and Goo Hara, 2019 K-pop also had its fair share of high moments—especially in music. Here are some highlights.

K-pop supergroup SuperM, formed by seven members of different South Korean boy bands, will make their Hollywood debut this week, group members said on Wednesday.

At least eight K-pop stars from China and even one from Taiwan and one from Hong Kong are publicly stating their support for Beijing’s one-China policy, eliciting a mixture of disappointment and understanding from fans.

After their stunning retirement announcements, two K-pop stars including a member of the superstars Big Bang are facing police questioning over a series of interlocking scandals that have roiled South Korea for weeks.

SEOUL, April 2: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un smiled, clapped and said he was 'deeply moved' by a rare performance from South Korean K-pop stars in Pyongyang, state media reported Monday.

SEOUL, March 20: A group of South Korea’s K-pop singers will visit Pyongyang from March 31, the South said on Tuesday, a reciprocal visit after North Korea sent performers to the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.

Korean pop, known as K-Pop, is a musical genre originating from South Korea, taking traditional pop music and adding a Korean twist. K-Pop music ties together a wide-variety of sounds and peculiar melodies. Yet, the genres main attraction may rest in its music—which are tightly-choreographed, star-studded, and narrative-based. It is through this melding of audio and visual elements that K-Pop has generated mass-appeal, particularly amongst teenagers and young-adults.
