Youths’ take on budget

Youths’ take on budget

Simply put, the national budget is the annual financial statement that presents the government’s proposed revenues and spending for a fiscal year. The budget comprises wealth allocation that is to be spent in the development of various national sectors. However, in Nepal’s context, despite prioritizing on the prosperity of the nation, the stats reveal rather unenthusiastic results.  The Nepal government is all set to announce the nation’s annual budget. Prior to the budget promulgation, Finance Minister Dr Yubraj Khatiwada addressed the Federal Parliament of Nepal on Sunday, to present the current fiscal statistic.  The stats showed that the development of infrastructures and social sectors performed below par in the previous year. However, the government employees blame the elections this year for the slow-paced development. On other hands, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli stated that the government would work to make Nepal more prosperous in the next five years.

My City team rendezvoused with youths around Kathmandu to find out their thoughts of the yearly budget.

Om Prakash Niraula, Water Supplier, Bhotebhal
Yes. I've got some ideas about the budget for the development and prosperity of the country.  What concerns me is that the majority of the youths are not concerned at all. I urge everyone to give priority to this topic.

Since Nepal is an agriculture-oriented country, the government should give more importance to foster the agriculture.  The current budget should prioritize agriculture more than other sectors.

Shreena Nepal, Student, Bhaktapur

As a science student, my rigorous academics never allowed me to get distracted. However, I know about the budget but not in great detail.  Since I’m done with high school, I plan to pursue law as my major subject.  With time, I hope to learn more about the budget.

Budget allocation is the division of the national revenue in various fields and categories aiming to complete various projects. In my opinion, the government should be more focus on teen-related issues because the teens of today are the motivated Youths of tomorrow. So, teen-centric projects by including STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) will help bring better change, and at the same time create mass job opportunities.

I am a student of grade ten so my knowledge is limited. However, I am aware of the fact that proper allocation of the budget is ideal for the development of the country.

I think education is the most important aspect in a country’s development. The government should give priority to budget distribution. I hope this fiscal budget is geared towards the sustainable development of the country.

Prinsha Niraula, Old Baneshwar, Student

I think the budget announcement is very important for the development because without allocating budget, the country cannot run efficiently. All citizens of the country contribute to the budget of the country through tax so it’s really important to know about it. I am a Kathmandu resident and fuming dust really bothers me while traveling. Similarly, bumpy ride and annoying traffic are the main distraction of the valley. So I think the government should give priority to the development of infrastructure like roads.

Dolma Yamzi Tamang, Bauddha, Student

Though budget distribution is very important for the development of the country, I am not well informed about the procedures. But I know that the authorities distribute a certain amount to all ministries under different headings which are further distributed among local authorities.

As agriculture is the major source of income of the country and most of the people depend on this profession, the government should plan ways to develop this sector. I hope this year's budget will contribute to the substantial economic growth of Nepal.
