Youth line up to apply for temporary police: Govt to pay Rs 44,000 in salary for 40 days work

KATHMANDU, March 21: Crowds of youth gathered in front of all 77 district police offices on Sunday. The crowds were there to apply for a 40-day temporary police service recruitment.

A temporary police force will also be deployed for the security of the local level election to be held on May 13. For that, Nepal Police has started collecting application forms from Sunday. Crowds of youths queuing up to apply at the district police offices for the 40-day term jobs have highlighted the unemployment situation in the country. It was seen that even the women with babies clinging to their arms were standing in the lines for hours for the 40-day job.

The Nepal Police Headquarters published the information on March 15 inviting applications for 100,000 temporary police recruits for the upcoming local level elections. According to the notice, collection of application forms started Sunday. For this, Nepali citizens who have completed 18 years of age and have not reached 54 years of age can apply till Friday (March 25). A large number of youths gathered in front of the district police offices across the country on Sunday, the first day to submit the application form.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Bishnu Kumar KC, spokesperson for the Police Headquarters, youths were queuing up to submit application forms till 6 PM in most of the districts. “On the first day, a large number of people came to submit the forms. We had asked them to get the application within the office hours,” he said, “But seeing the pressure of the youth, we instructed our officers to let those who had queued up to submit their applications.” Unemployed youths queued up in most of the districts since 8 AM to become temporary police. In Tarai-Madhesh districts, even in the scorching heat, youths queued up for hours to submit their applications.

According to SSP KC, more than 30,000 people applied on the first day. "The exact figures are not yet available. In Kathmandu alone, more than 1,200 people have applied,” he said. "At first glance, there are preliminary figures of more than 30,000 applications from all the districts."

The government has stated that priority will be given to those who have served in the Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force, ex-forest guards, retired from foreign security agencies, those who joined the temporary police in the previous election and those who have applied for security from 2021 and passed the physical fitness and health examination.

Spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police Office, Superintendent of Police (SP) Santosh Singh Rathore said, "Most of the youths were seen in the crowd on the police office premises in all the three districts of the Kathmandu Valley. “In the past, a similar crowd was seen in the recruitment process.”

There is no guarantee of selection even if you submit an application for 40 days term police, but it costs at least eight to ten thousand rupees to come to the district headquarters. Krit Nepali of Doti who worked in the temporary police in the last election said, "It is not possible to be a temporary police officer by one's own strength. One needs people in the system to get recruited.”

He, who is preparing to apply for admission this time as well, said that the expenses would reach Rs 16,000 for participation alone. “It costs Rs 1,000 to reach Silgadhi from the village. You have to stay in the hotel for 15/16 days,” he said. He said that even if he participates in the process by spending the money, he will be drowned in debt if he is not selected for the service.” This time the selection process will start from March 29.

The training for the temporary police force will start from April 11 by publishing the results on April 5. The government is preparing to deploy the selected temporary police after training them for seven days. The selected personnel will have to work for 40 days.

The salary for a temporary police officer is Rs 30,240, in which basic salary is Rs 22,680   for the service time of 40 days. There will also be rations allowance of Rs 7,200, uniform and other allowances of Rs 6,000, transport allowance of Rs 1,000 as well as insurance coverages.
