ILLAM, August 6: A women's grave was dug out in Maijogmai Rural Municipality-4 of Namsaling in Ilam district on Friday in order to steal her gold ornaments. The necklace was taken off from the grave.

Thirty-year-old Sunita Limbu had died of typhoid on the way to hospital on Wednesday. Limbu, who was attending a funeral of her relative, suffered from fever in between. She was at first admitted to a local hospital in Illam but was later referred to Jhapa. Unfortunately, she succumbed to her illness on the way to the hospital.

Her dead body was buried near her home as per the Limbu tradition on Thursday.  The next day, some sick-minded people dug up her grave and stole her necklace, informed former lawmaker Bhuwan Limbu.  “Some thieves dug out her grave at night in expectation of getting buried gold ornaments," he said. According to him, police have already started investigating into the case.

Lawmaker Limbu stated that police have yet to found the culprit and this could encourage similar kinds of cases. As per the Limbu tradition, some of the gold ornaments are buried along with the dead body.

"But we had never heard of cases where someone's dead body was dug out to get those ornaments," he added.
